What Happens During a Permanent Makeup Brow Appointment? A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're considering permanent makeup for the first time, you may be wondering:

“What actually happens during the appointment—and why does it take 2–3 hours?”

For most of my permanent makeup brow services, I recommend setting aside approximately 2–3 hours.

But that doesn't mean I'm tattooing your brows for three hours.

A significant part of your appointment happens before the procedure even begins. We take time to discuss your goals, evaluate your natural brows and skin, design your shape, select the right technique and color, and make sure you're completely comfortable with the plan.

I don't believe permanent makeup should feel rushed.

Here's what you can expect when you come to Maya Louredo Beauty for your brow appointment.

Step 1: Consultation and Brow Evaluation

We start by talking.

I want to understand what you're hoping to achieve with permanent makeup and, just as importantly, what you don't want.

Maybe you want to restore areas where your natural brow hair is sparse. Maybe you're tired of filling in your brows every morning. Or perhaps you already have relatively full brows but want a more balanced and defined shape.

I'll also evaluate your:

• Natural brow growth

• Skin characteristics

• Facial features and proportions

• Existing brow shape

• Areas of density or sparseness

• Previous permanent makeup, if applicable

This evaluation helps me determine what will realistically work for your brows and your skin.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Permanent Makeup Technique

Not every client should receive exactly the same technique.

Depending on your skin, natural brow hair, desired result, and any existing pigment, we may discuss options such as Nanoblading, Nano Brows, Powder Brows, or a combination technique.

For example, someone wanting extremely natural-looking hair strokes may be a good candidate for a hairstroke technique, while another skin type may achieve a more predictable healed result with powder.

The goal isn't to choose whichever technique happens to be trending.

I want to choose the technique that makes sense for you and, most importantly, for your healed result.

Step 3: Brow Mapping and Designing Your Shape

This is one of the most important parts of your appointment.

Before I perform permanent makeup, I carefully design your brows.

I take into consideration your facial structure, natural brow growth, proportions, symmetry, and the look you want to achieve.

But brow mapping isn't about creating two mathematically identical eyebrows.

Faces aren't perfectly symmetrical—and natural eyebrows aren't either.

My goal is to create balance while still respecting your natural features.

I don't want your brows to look like a template was placed on your face.

I want them to look like they belong to you.

Do I Get to Approve My Brow Shape?

Absolutely.

We review the design together before I begin the procedure.

This is your face, and I want you involved in the process.

If there's something you want slightly fuller, softer, higher, lower, or otherwise adjusted, this is when we discuss it.

I would rather spend additional time perfecting the design than rush into the procedure.

Nothing is tattooed simply because I finished drawing it. We agree on the design first.

Step 4: Selecting Your Brow Color

Color selection is another part of the customization process.

I'm not simply choosing “brown” from a bottle.

Your natural brow hair, skin characteristics, undertone, desired intensity, technique, and existing pigment can all influence my pigment selection.

I also think about how that color is expected to heal, not only how it appears when it's freshly implanted.

Immediately after permanent makeup, pigment usually appears stronger and more defined. As the skin heals, the result softens.

That's why experience with healed results is so important when selecting pigment.

Step 5: Preparing for the Procedure

Once we've finalized your design and color, I'll prepare the area and get everything ready for the actual permanent makeup procedure.

I follow appropriate sanitation and preparation protocols and make sure you're positioned comfortably before we begin.

I'll also explain what we're doing so you aren't lying there wondering what's happening next.

For many first-time clients, knowing what to expect makes the experience much more relaxing.

Step 6: Creating Your New Brows

Now we move into the actual procedure.

The way I work depends on the technique we've selected.

With Nanoblading, for example, I create fine hairstrokes using a manual tool.

With Nano Brows, hairstrokes are created using a permanent makeup machine and a single needle.

With Powder Brows, the goal is different—we're creating a soft shaded effect rather than individual hairstrokes.

Regardless of the technique, I'm constantly paying attention to the pattern, direction, spacing, saturation, and how the work integrates with your natural brow hair.

The goal isn't simply to put pigment into the skin.

It's to create a result that looks intentional and natural both now and once it's healed.

Step 7: Final Review

Once the procedure is complete, we'll look at your brows together.

Remember that freshly done permanent makeup will typically appear darker and more defined than the final healed result.

That is normal.

Your brows will go through several changes during the healing process before the pigment settles into its final appearance.

I'll explain what you can expect so you don't wake up on Day 3 wondering why your brows look different from Day 1.

Step 8: Aftercare Instructions

Before you leave, we'll go over your aftercare.

You'll receive instructions explaining how to care for the area and what to avoid during the initial healing period.

That may include being careful with things such as excessive sweating, swimming, saunas, steam, makeup directly over the healing brows, irritating skincare products, and picking or peeling any flaking skin.

You don't have to memorize everything before your appointment.

I'll guide you through it.

So, How Long Does a Permanent Makeup Appointment Actually Take?

For most brow permanent makeup appointments, I recommend planning for approximately 2–3 hours.

The exact amount of time can vary depending on the technique, your natural brows, previous permanent makeup, skin characteristics, and how much customization is needed.

And I don't like treating the appointment like a race.

Some clients require more time during mapping. Others already know exactly what they want. Previous permanent makeup may require additional evaluation.

The appointment takes the time your brows need.

Why Does Brow Mapping Take So Much Time?

Because once we begin implanting pigment, we're creating something designed to remain visible for a long time.

Spending additional time getting the design right makes much more sense to me than rushing through mapping just so the appointment can finish earlier.

I want to look at your brows from different perspectives, evaluate their relationship with your facial features, and make adjustments before we begin.

The procedure itself matters tremendously—but the plan behind the procedure matters too.

What If I Already Have Permanent Makeup?

Please tell me before your appointment.

Previous permanent makeup can significantly change what we're able to do.

I need to evaluate the remaining pigment's color, saturation, shape, and placement before determining whether I can work over it.

If the previous pigment is light enough, we may have options.

If it's extremely saturated, significantly discolored, or outside the shape we're trying to create, additional fading or removal may be a better first step.

Whenever possible, send me clear, makeup-free photos beforehand rather than waiting until the day of your appointment.

What Should I Do Before My Appointment?

I provide specific pre-care instructions, but generally, I want the treatment area to be healthy and free from unnecessary irritation.

You should also let me know about relevant medications, medical conditions, previous permanent makeup, and recent cosmetic or skin treatments.

And there's no need to perfectly shape your eyebrows for me beforehand.

I actually prefer seeing your natural growth because it gives me more information when I'm designing your brows.

What Happens After the Appointment?

Then comes something I consider just as important as the procedure itself:

healing.

Your brows will initially appear darker and more defined. You may experience light flaking, followed by a period when the pigment appears softer or even temporarily lighter.

Over the following weeks, the color continues settling.

Complete healing generally takes around 4–6 weeks, which is why I don't judge your final result based on what your brows look like during the first several days.

An initial follow-up is typically performed around 4–8 weeks after your procedure so I can evaluate your healed results and make adjustments when needed.

Permanent Makeup Should Feel Personal

One of the biggest misconceptions about permanent makeup is that the appointment is simply:

Choose a brow → tattoo it → go home.

That's not how I approach my work.

Your natural brows, skin, face, preferences, lifestyle, and long-term results all matter.

The actual procedure is only one part of creating beautiful permanent makeup.

Consultation, design, technique selection, pigment selection, execution, healing, and aftercare all work together.

That's why I reserve several hours for a brow appointment.

I'm not trying to create the fastest brows possible.

I'm trying to create brows that look like they were designed specifically for the person wearing them.
